The Journey

What 10 Sessions Look Like

Research shows that even a brief course of therapy can make a meaningful difference in a child's life. Here's what the journey typically looks like.

Before Session 1

Getting Ready

Before therapy begins, the caregiver completes intake paperwork and a pre-therapy survey. The therapist reviews this information to understand the child’s background, strengths, and areas of concern. This preparation helps the therapist hit the ground running from the very first session.

Sessions 1–2

Building Trust

The first sessions are about building rapport and creating a safe space. The therapist gets to know the child through play, conversation, and observation. Goals are collaboratively set with the family. The child begins to feel comfortable and understood.

Sessions 3–5

The Child’s Story Starts to Show

As trust deepens, the child begins to express emotions and experiences more openly. The therapist uses evidence-based techniques tailored to the child’s age and needs. Patterns emerge, coping skills are introduced, and the child starts to build new tools for managing big feelings.

Sessions 6–8

Working Through It

This is where deeper therapeutic work happens. The child practices new skills, works through difficult experiences, and begins to show progress. Caregivers may be involved in sessions to strengthen the family system and reinforce what the child is learning at home.

Sessions 9–10

Noticing Progress, Planning Ahead

The therapist and family review progress and celebrate growth. A post-therapy survey captures changes. The therapist provides recommendations for next steps — whether that means continuing therapy, transitioning to less frequent sessions, or closing out with a strong foundation in place.
